Originally designed as part of the replacement for the 'G' Wagon, but with the 'help' of Chrysler and the Alabama plant, the ML class came about as part of the new partnership.  Once the recipient of Motor Trend's Truck of the Year (1998 - ML320), the first-gen ML had a less than perfect quality reputation.
